Gloria went to Capri and put together a list of her insider tips for your next trip to the Italian island

The small island in the Gulf of Naples has always been a magnet for artists, intellectuals, and aesthetes: from the Roman emperor to Maxim Gorki all the way to Jackie Kennedy. That brought Capri a reputation as a jet-set destination in the 60s. Even today, there’s hardly a better place to recharge your batteries with a little bit of la dolce vita and experience an unforgettable short break.

Hotel: J.K. PlaceCapri

This five-star luxury hotel and spa belongs to the island’s top addresses and is located just a few minutes by foot from Marina Grande. You can look out directly on the deep blue of the sea from this imposing property and its large outdoor pool – the color of which is reflected everywhere in the classically elegant interior décor of the grand villa. Because of its dreamy location, the J.K. Place Capri is one of the few hotels that can offer its guests direct access to the sea.

Strolling: La Piazzetta

From down at the harbor, it’s best to take the funicolare – a cable railway – up to the city center, La Piazetta. It’s wonderful to watch the comings and goings at this popular square over an espresso at Bar Tiberio. The small, quaint alleys host an interesting mix of established and traditional local artisans and luxurious boutiques like Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, and Hermès

Shopping: Chanel Pop-Up Boutique

While strolling on La Piazzetta, take a chance to also visit the Chanel pop-up shop in this noble neighborhood. Until September, 30th 2017 you will be able to find the new Chanel Gabrielle bag next to further Accessories and selected Prêt-à-Porter pieces from the Paris Cosmopolite 2016/17 Métiers d’Art collection, while enjoying the Mediterranean setting.

Day Trip: Boat tour Around the Island

©Instagram | capriseaservice: Lovely time ...

An especially impressive way to experience Capri is to take a boat tour around the island. The journey goes past breathtaking cliffs, swimming next to the Faraglioni rocks, and of course into the Blue Grotto – the best-known rock cave in the country. You can only reach the inside of this gorgeous grotto when weather conditions allow – you have to travel through the cave’s small, one-and-a-half-meter high entrance. Once inside, it’s an enigmatic, azure blue spectacle of color.

Worth Seeing: Villa San Michele

This wonderful villa was built at the end of the 19th century in the heights of Anacapri and belonged to the Swedish doctor and author Axel Munthe. Today, the property serves as a small museum, but it’s especially the lovingly designed garden with a view of the sea all the way down to the main harbor that makes a visit here unforgettable. You should definitely order a piece of lemon almond cake at the little Café Casa Oliv on the roof at the end of your tour.

Beach Club: La Fontelina

You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to finding the perfect seaside resort on Capri. The most fashionable beach on the island belongs to the top restaurant La Fontelina and is located directly at the Faraglioni rocks. This slightly hidden oasis can only be reached by a small path or by boat. Even Brigitte Bardot came and went here. In any case, you’ll have to reserve well in advance if you want to snag one of the highly coveted tables here.

Beach Club: Bagni Internazionali

In contrast, the Bagni Internazionali is easy to reach and is located directly on Marina Piccola. The ambiance will put you immediately straight back in the 60s. The mood is very relaxed and the crowd rather consists of Italian families. You can get a spot in the first row with a view of the Faraglioni rocks without a reservation.

Restaurant: Le Grottelle

You have to accept walking a little longer, and partially up a steep incline, in order to reach this magical place. Once you’ve reached the restaurant, you’ll immediately be rewarded for the effort with probably the most romantic spot on the island. The kitchen is found basically in the middle of a rock grotto and, from the terrace, you can look far out over the sea while enjoying homemade pasta and freshly caught fish. La Grottelle is an unforgettable highlight – especially at a full moon.

Restaurant: Da Paolino Ristorante a Capri

The celebrity hangout of Capri, Da Paolino can already count Leonardo DiCaprio and Rihanna among its guests. Completely in line with the saying “see and be seen,” on some evenings you’ll see the complete Dolce & Gabbana spring/summer collection sitting at the tables. You’ll eat under a canopy of lemon trees which old Paolino has been tending to for years. The lemon motif is also seen everywhere else in the restaurant, from the tablecloths to the plates. And, consequently and quite logically, you’ll also find the best limoncello in all of Italy here!
