Shopping List: Ori Goes South Africa

Fashion editor Oriane is travelling to South Africa and put together a shopping list, including The Row, Céline, and Gianvito Rossi

After a beautiful and sunny September spent between the hey woman! headquarters and my favorite tanning spot in Weinbergspark, my mood suffered a slight blow as the days became shorter and the trees began to lose their leaves. Better safe than sorry: I decided to head for a medical check-up. The result? A major lack of vitamin D. So, I had to say: “Berlin, I love you. But, you’re bringing me down!” And, what better solution than spending January in South Africa and splitting winter into two parts?

For this edition of the shopping list, we decided to focus on the new collections that have just started coming online. I chose items that are colorful and light each of them inspired by strong ethnic and traditional influences.

I adore these kinds of traditional influences in fashion and it’s no surprise that some of my favorite shows have always been Valentino, Métiers d’Arts by Chanel, and Saint Laurent (when Yves himself was still running the show). Whether Yves Saint Laurent’s Ballets Russes collection in 1976, Chanel’s more recent Paris-Salzburg collection in 2014, or Valentino’s Frida Kahlo-inspired designs for Resort 2015, there are so many examples of how this mix of tradition and modernity places fashion into the role of a relative concept. Trends and styles are constantly being recycled and renewed, and so much so that even the most modern of pieces often derive from the old and the classic.

The Resort and Spring/Summer 2017 shows presented a strong Latin-American influence with Cuban vibes: For example, this long skirt from Valentino’s Resort collection and Aquazzura’s new shoe collection, Samba. Jewelry is also influenced by traditional savoir-faire, like this gold-tone, talisman-inspired ring by Chloé and my favorite handcrafted-in-Greece earrings by Katerina Makriyianni. Also traditionally Greek, these gladiators by Ancient Greek Sandals are definitely my perfect everyday summer shoe and the ideal choice for my adventures in South Africa! Of course, no holiday is complete without the obligatory swimsuit and I love this one by Tabula Rasa because, like many of their pieces, it shows off wonderful antique-looking fabrics while still feeling fresh and modern.

Now, if you would be as so kind as to excuse me there’s a deck chair and a cold mojito that need my attention. See you soon or, as they say in Zulu: Hamba kahle!
