Editorial: Scotch & Soda “Lights on”

With its festive fashions and Lights On campaign, Scotch & Soda inspired this editorial full of playful uses of light

Less than nine hours of sunlight reach Berlin on a December day. No other season challenges the body and mind as much as winter, bringing with it an increased need for light, warmth, and beautiful stories. Like fire, light is one of the most important phenomena for all cultures. According to the classical definition, it is a form of electromagnetic radiation. In the narrower sense, it is only those parts of the entire electromagnetic spectrum that are visible to the human eye that are meant. And for all of those intangible things, ­we humans have found another context, synonym, or association – symbols that deal with light pervade philology, psychology, and the visual arts. Light seems to play a dominant role in the winter season, be it in Christmas decorations or New Year’s fireworks, shimmering clothes and accessories, or in interior design. Yet despite all of the beauty and joy that surrounds these sparkling things, an idea resonates: That is, looking in those places where not everything shines, be it in Berlin, Amsterdam, or New York.

Dutch label Scotch & Soda made it a goal to bring light to the darkness. In keeping with the festive season, the Amsterdam-based company has brought together five Dutch influencers from a variety of sectors who have made it their job to give back. These figures from art, culture, literature, music, and politics have been supporting and documenting social projects for years. With Scotch & Soda and the Lights On campaign, they have the opportunity to spread their message. Included are actress and Get It Done project initiator Hanna Verboom, Amsterdam’s Night Mayor and event organizer Mirik Milan, filmmaker and geoscientist Safi Graauw (whose project Justdiggit works on programs to cool the planet faster than we warm it up), Amsterdam Characters author Anne Brugts (the book is dedicated Amsterdam’s diversity), and musician and former Kane member Dennis van Leeuwen (who is also an ambassador of the Amsterdam Music School, which promotes equal opportunities for children). Ozlem Birkalan, head of brand marketing at Scotch & Soda, says of the project: “At this time of year, Scotch & Soda wants to celebrate all that unites. More than that, we want to shine our light on the Amsterdammers who make a positive difference, not just during the festive month – but every day.” Pride in the Dutch capital flashes through these lines. It’s hardly surprising: The label has stood for Amsterdam and its positive synergies since 1985.

Inspired by light, this editorial is meant to be about the abstract interplay of shadow and light, textures and colors, as well as eclectic fashion combinations. It couldn’t be more fitting that we are presenting these looks with the help of lighting installations and lamps by Canadian manufacturer Bocci.
