TOP 5: Soaps

I’ve woken up so happily.

I slap my hips.

The water entices. The soap laughs.

I am thirsty for breaths of air.

Joachim Ringelnatz has so wonderfully and cheerfully described the desire for cleanliness and fresh energy in his poem “Morgenwonne” (Morning Bliss). Next to water in the ritual of washing is soap in every form and color imaginable.

There is hardly a beauty product as essential as soap: it can be found in almost every bathroom and is used several times a day. Yet, we don’t give it too much thought. But it’s important that such a ubiquitous product is suitable. Soap should have a pleasant, yet unobtrusive, smell – because who wants to have the scent of an intrusive perfume on their hands as they’re handling food or exchanging greetings. Soap should also be gently nourishing and get hands clean, but it shouldn’t make them chapped or irritating to sensitive or stressed skin. Whether liquid or a bar is a matter of personal taste, but it should also look pretty. We can’t decide on a favorite (why? Because a stockpile of soap can always be used), but, we have at least chosen our top five.

1. No. 74 Gurkmynta Tyal from L:a Bruket

La Bruket

Soap, € 25,50 via GreenGlam

This soap smells so fresh and deliciously of cucumber and mint, you almost want to mix a drink with it.

The idea behind L:a Brucket – beauty in brown bottles, silver tubes or natural packing paper – originated in Varberg, on the coast of the Swedish North Sea. The products are still manufactured there today. The ingredients of the candles, shampoos or creams come from natural origins and are certified organic by Ecocert.

Back to the soap: the lovely design, and above all the naturally fresh and simultaneously understated scent, have made the product a favorite for hand washing and showering.

2. Raw Shea Butter Soap Garden from Dr. Woods

Dr. Woods

Raw Shea Butter Soap, USD 3,19 via iHerb

Discovered in a small organic shop in Brooklyn, it has since become an integral part of the bathroom: the soap from Dr. Woods!

The organic soaps, made in the USA, are beautifully packaged in lovingly designed paper bearing a tree and the individual soap names in the most gorgeous colors, that you almost don’t want to unwrap them. But if the desire is pressing, because the fragrance is flowing from your countertop, then washing your hands with the bar soap is a real treat. Our favorite, Garden Cucumber, has a rich shea butter moisturizer and guarantees a refreshing exfoliation with dried mint leaves and the scent of cucumber and summer herbs. Unfortunatly we haven’t yet found the soap within hand’s reach in Germany, but you can buy it online here or simply bring back a large supply after your next visit to New York.

3. Pink Clay Soap from Herbivore Botanicals

Herbivore Botanicals

Soap, € 13,50 via Niche Beauty

The pink bar soap not only beautifies the edge of your sink, but also your hands. The clay in the soap nourishes the skin with minerals and is particularly effective at cleansing, because the fine surface structure of clay draws out impurities like a sponge. A variety of plant oils (coconut, olive, palm, geranium and blood orange) moisturize and have a pleasantly fruity floral scent.

Tip: The soap can also be used for the face and body. Just not the same piece as was used  for hand washing!

4. Hand Wash Sweet Orange Cedarwood Sage from Grown Alchemist

Grown Alchemist

Hand Wash, € 25,50 via Niche Beauty

The kind of gently cleansing and nourishing soap you wish for. The secret? Cold-pressed sweet orange oil, which stimulates blood circulation, and moisturizing sweet almond oil. Wonderful side effect: the sweet woody scent!

It’s also worth taking a look at the other products from Grown AlchemistIn addition to beautiful and pleasantly smelling soaps, the brand offers face and hair care with organically certified ingredients.

5. Orange Blossom Scented soap from Palmaria Mallorca

Palmaria Mallorca

Soap, € 10,00 via Silo Store

Summer in the Mediterranean: salt, pine and orange trees. Any one who wants to have a smell like this in their bathroom should consider a soap from Palmaria Mallorca: it insures an immediate good mood. As does the creamy foaming consistency while lathering away.
