Pre-Fall Picks 2016: From Velvet to Wool

Oriane Baud has exclusive Pre-Fall Picks for 2016 that you don’t want to miss

Every year it’s the same story: when September rolls around, my mood has already shifted into layers and winter looks. We all love summer and the simplicity of just jumping into a dress in the morning, wearing only a golden tan (the result of summer vacations or several reading session at the park) as makeup. So what better way to get ready for the coming colder days than by presenting you with some of our favorite items of the new Pre-Fall/Winter 16 collections?

We’re used to seeing pops of color in summer collections. This Pre-Fall/Winter season, however, the focus is on very colorful clothing and accessories as much as materials. That means no more totally grey or black looks: pink, red, green, yellow…all of these colors are going to carry on through September and are going to stay in our closets for winter time. The Gucci and Burberry collections – but also Demna Gvasalia’s first for Balenciaga – are very good examples of this “color fever”.

Regarding materials, coziness is the key: warm wool, fluffy fur, soft velvet, trendy corduroy… all of those fabrics you abstain from wearing for 3 months and cannot wait to get back into when September finally hits town. Corduroy is very present in the Pre-Fall collections: brands like Miu Miu have used it for skirts, pants, and coats. It’s the same thing with fur, which is no longer reserved for jackets but also seen on a lot of accessories, like this amazing Stella McCartney bag (fake fur, of course!) and shoes (Chloé, Fendi, Givenchy, among others). And no need to mention our all time favorite: velvet. It’s everywhere and on everything!

Autumn and winter are also synonymous with staying in more often, organizing dinner with friends at home, and also with all of the celebrations: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas…all of them are great occasions for getting dressed up and sharing food. The topic of celebration was the main inspiration for this still life photo shoot, from the strong shot of a shearling Balenciaga scarf with red wine, to a very metallic photo of Dries Van Noten shoes with a delicious carrot cake. The mood is definitely all about party time. Nothing new – girls just wanna have fun! – and of course it’s even better when it includes wearing fancy shoes, wrapping yourself up in a cozy wool sweater or warm furry scarf, eating cake, and drinking Montepulciano!

A special thank you to Mytheresa and Matchesfashion for the beautiful products.
