Berlin 2016: Gucci, Givenchy, Prada

Well, it looks like… Oh, what, that is Berlin! This or something similar was rattling around in our heads the first time we saw the Glen Luchford photographed Spring/Summer 2016 campaign from Gucci. Veronika correctly remembered the whole thing as key scenes from “Christiane F.,” which, in her opinion was a fascinatingly good 1981 film (soundtrack by David Bowie) adaptation from the scandal-ridden bestseller (“We Children of Bahnhof Zoo”) that recounts the real stories of Christiane F. At any rate, in the campaign you can certainly see a horde of young models enjoying themselves in the big city – including skateboarding in the subways – with a peacock in arm, naturally. Creative Director Christopher Simmonds, who is responsible for visual rebranding under the change in staff from Alessandro Michele, has clearly done his best work.

The Brutalist architecture of Berlin also offers a fantastic backdrop for lookbooks. For example, Givenchy went so far as to capture their entire pre-fall 2016 collection in the fresh air of Karl-Marx-Allee, as well as in Kino International and a photo studio. Next to the 39-year old Kristy Hume, we discovered the short-haired, platinum blonde haircut of, thank god, Kris Gottschalk, who – when she’s not running around the city – has been seen in the vicinity of Riccardo Tisci  for a while now. Maxi Gumppenberg and Patrick Bienert were the photographers, which, of course, made us very happy. Way to go, guys! Matt Lambert captured it all on video.

We like to think that even Natalia Vodianova and Sasha Pivovarova sit here in East German hotel lobbies – the elevator panels and the plaster window sill where they lounge so much look like DDR-times to us! From behind the camera Steven Meisel created incredibly atmospheric imagery that puts the designs of the SS16 collection into reverent, almost romantic scenes. With her presence, newcomer model Yasmin Wijnaldum ensures that it is not too cliché classic. Despite the fact that those images look just wonderful to me, there is still one secretly kept all time favorite in my head: Do you remember Amber Valletta in a rowboat on a dark lake in 1997
