I always thought that TNT was probably one of the world’s best brand names. The former TNT, that is Gloria von Thurn und Taxis, now passed on this brand to her daughter Elisabeth, who writes a column about her life for the American Vogue. Today at noon, it is the original TNT’s turn. During Berlin Gallery Weekend 2016 she presents her portrait series Berlin Faces within a solo exhibition at The Corner.
For starters, there’s not too much TNT energy. Gloria’s relaxed manner soothes me. She has a special way of speaking, that is characteristic of most people, who lead an exciting life. We talk about her spectacles. And we agree, that he should keep them on. She wears this pink, rimless pair of glasses with a twinset pullover. To be honest, that would not have been a proper outfit, back in the original TNT days. But now, this midday, it fits her well and we begin to talk about the idea of the Berlin society, that Gloria painted.
Gloria begged her friends in Berlin, to make lists, who is in on the it-crowd – then they discussed the lists and googled images, selected faces, painted pictures. Jeff Koons, the artist, had a look at it and made a few remarks. So Gloria wasn’t under any pressure to be correct – and the whole thing almost had something casual to it. Let’s put it this way: Gloria is not under pressure because of the Berlin society. Perhaps, she isn’t put under pressure at all, not by any society.
That is why she can speak quietly, leave her glasses on and only has to position herself at the center of the room, on the evening of that particular day. Soon the visitors arrive and gather around the woman in the (attention!) fuchsia red dress. Obviously, she left the twin set at home. She kept her glasses on though. And just like that the TNT energy flows, there’s nothing Gloria has to do, neither about the glasses, nor about the dress.
There aren’t so many people like Gloria in this country and to the people who are like her, things don’t come easily. They have lived at places and seen things, that others do not know and will not ever know. Most visitors do not like that here, but on Gloria’s evening you could see in their faces, that they enjoy taking a closer look at these people. After all, you never know what happens, when you look into the face of a person who has experienced things. Nothing bad could happen, right? Except that your life might change over night.
