Best of Céline by Tommy Ton

Céline is presenting the last collection under Phoebe Philo’s direction. To say goodbye, street style photographer Tommy Ton put together a series of pictures from her creative period.

Céline is presenting the last collection under Phoebe Philo’s direction today: After more than a decade as creative director, the designer is leaving the French label. The news spread like wildfire across the industry and amongst fans in a wave of whispers. After all, she had been defining a strong image of women since 2008 that was really about wearing beautiful fashion and wanting to live in it – every day. Functionality and comfort played a major role in that image. Over the years she experimented with silhouettes, colors, and materials, never losing herself in trends or ideas. The list of favorite pieces is a long one and they will probably remain in our wardrobes forever – not out of nostalgia, but out of usefulness. She described her vision in an interview during the 2014 Vogue Fashion Festival: “I am not a big fan of women being sexualized through clothes, as you can probably tell from my work. I have no problem with a woman wearing anything as long as she has chosen to wear it for herself. But I do think there are too many images of women that are sexualized and too many examples of women dressing for other people and disempowering themselves in the process.”

While Philo has spent recent years concentrating on designing the kind of fashion that you want to have, wear, and show, there were others capturing this development. One of them is street style photographer Tommy Ton, who has been documenting people in and around the fashion industry for more than ten years. The Canadian photographer became famous through his fashion week photos for style.com and gq.com as well as his blog Jak & Jil, which was founded back in 2005, and he is now one of the key digital figures in the fashion world. These days you can find more than 15,000 pictures on his website that put his feeling for people, fashion, and accessories in a visual form, always in the most beautifully casual and natural way. And if you’ve ever met him in person, he is also really nice.

As an admirer of Phoebe Philo’s designs for Céline, Tommy Ton has now put together a series of pictures in homage to her creative period. The photographs show the most beautiful Céline looks that Ton has photographed on people during the fashion weeks in recent years. And look at that, they show everything that Céline is all about: the bags, the knitwear, the dresses, the trench coats, and the sneakers. Together with Tommy Ton, we’re looking back at the most beautiful moments and showing our favorite motifs here on hey woman!

PS: Inspired by Philo, Tommy Ton has been working as artistic director on the American label Deveaux since last year. A unisex brand that creates beautiful and simple everyday pieces with the highest possible quality standards. Beautiful!
