The Kaufhaus des Westens (literally translated: the shopping department of the west) first opened its doors in 1907 and since then has turned into Europe’s largest luxury department store, with over 10 million visitors a year. So far so good, some might say – the store has kept up incredibly well for its age. And yet, it’s time for a makeover: rejuvenating cure of sorts, a complete overhaul. And no other than Rem Koolhaas has been tapped to take over this project. In fact, he’s already introducing details relating to the project. The depicted concept will try and protect the house from any trials and tribulations the future has to offer. Four overarching areas will be combined into one, all of which will be connected by a transversal escalator which will be situated in the body of the building. All of this makes sense and looks lovely, could Rem possibly take over KaDeWe’s online presence and/or perhaps implement a online shop? Or will we have to be content with the new glass roof, longer opening hours, and a new gourmet deli section for now? Find more information on the project here (English) und here (German).
