For the charity auction for Operndorf Afrika at König Galerie, artists designed unique T-shirts for the good cause
Just in time with the beginning of fall, the Festspielhaus Afrika gGmbH organizes a charity auction in cooperation with the König Galerie in the favor of Christoph Schlingensief’s Operndorf Afrika at St. Agnes in Berlin on September 22.
International young as well as renowned artists, like Mark Bradford, Paul McCarthy, Claudia Comte, Alicja Kwade and Jonathan Meese, all of whom are feeling deeply connected to Operndorf Afrika, created T-shirts, which were provided with the friendly assistance of Hess Natur.
The auction’s day, exactly two days before the federal election 2017, was chosen deliberately: Since eight years, Aino Laberenz and her team have been working in Burkina Faso now – a country that, till 2014, doesn’t have known democratic elections over decades. Today, Burkina Faso lives a young democracy, for whom it’s not a given to be allowed to use their own voice as political power. Shortly before this year’s german elections, the Operndorf Afrika wants to recall the estimation of democracy.
The idea of Operndorf Afrika – located in Burkina Faso, West Africa – dates from the German artist Christoph Schlingensief. Since 2009, his intercultural project continuously has been advanced, enlarged and converted under the direction of Aino Laberenz: a place of international encounter, where people of different origins can work together artistically and swap ideas on art.
