Shopping: Millennial Colors

Millennial colors are getting more and more popular and – at least in our minds – they’re ringing in the summer season

It’s a love of color that links American photographer Joel Meyerowitz and Wes Anderson, the director of films like The Grand Budapest Hotel. I have admired both artists for their visual worlds since my youth, for their flair and for their use of color. I guess they’re having fun doing it, too. For several seasons now, fashion has also been more colorful and cheerful than ever.

The term “Millennial pink” has already been established for a while now and other “Millennial colors” have followed – the likes of “Gen Z yellow” and “little boy blue.”

As the names suggest, they all stand for a kind of attitude to life and for the mood of the Millennial generation. We won’t comment on the fact that those colors existed before (but we know them – and Wes Anderson, too). The winter 17/18 season has already shown a preference for this three-color combination in fashion and design. For example, let’s remember the mega cover of Vogue Italia with Lara Stone in a yellow Calvin Klein coat. And even at the Salone di Mobile furniture fair, Marc Anne’s Le Refuge bed became the most popular Instagram motif. The bed was – of course – pink.

Although the winter in Europe is only really just getting started, fashion is already preparing for the 2018 summer season. The shops and online shops are filling up. And the story continues just as it stopped – in sorbet colors and powdery tones.

Probably the best look was one by Phoebe Philo for Céline: a combination of an oversized pink blazer and a soft yellow pleated skirt. Balenciaga introduced a sky-blue slip dress with a sweater in the same color. And, thanks to Nina Ricci, I would like to have some baggy yellow pants now, too (preferably with matching headwear). Lilac and purple tones are added to the pink, as well. Yellow and blue are worn with pistachio, raspberry, and apricot. But more about that soon, at the ice cream parlor and on hey woman! That’s a promise.

Madeleine is a fashion journalist. For as long as she can remember she has been passionate about fashion and accessories, in particular cashmere sweaters and jewelry.
