Australian-born jewelry designer Jordan Askill put together a very special playlist dedicated to all the women out there
It took me quite a while to write this intro for Jordan Askill. My apologies! Because it’s simply not fair to have withheld this very special playlist for so long! The more I am fascinated by a person, you see, the longer it takes to nail it down in copy. Isn’t it hard to describe that special feeling? Ok, let me try to explain a bit better:
An Australian-born jewelry designer, Jordan is exactly my age. And when we first met, a few years ago in his adopted home of New York, we clicked right away. His vintage leather jacket, slim jeans, and t-shirt all hugged his lanky body like a second skin armor. On a second glance, I discovered a beautiful golden necklace with a pendant that looked like a familiar creature: a sculpted panther. When he speaks about his work, his passion is clearly visible – something he discovered when working in Paris for Hedi Slimane’s design team at Dior Homme back in the day.
Every one of his collections features an endangered species. He translates them into beautiful precious shapes and adorns them with stones. Needless to say, I dream of owning a vast Askill collection one day! He won the British Fashion Award for Emerging Accessory Design in 2015 and was the first jewelry designer to win it in over 5 years.
His love for music is no surprise: His mum and dad always made sure they were into music – and “they” includes his two brothers, Daniel and Lorin, both of whom are directors who work on music videos, including a few for Australian singer Sia. As Jordan says: “The sound of Billie Holiday and the smell of coffee were always prevalent on Sunday mornings. My father is a composer and musician, and my mother worked for Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe, who was a close part of my life growing up. Music connects to the feelings in my work.”
He claims Somewhere over the Rainbow is his favorite song and, just like me, is fascinated by Visconti’s melancholic, nostalgic, and morbid version of King Ludwig – yes, the fairytale king from Bavaria! His favorite band is The Cranberries and he loves horoscopes just like the whole hey woman! team. And, of course his favorite personal playlist was made by his good friend Michelle Jank (another magic Aussie) back when they lived in Paris together.
This playlist is truly dedicated to the “hey woman!” You see, Jordan created the playlist only using what he calls “heroic female vocalists” – and, ideally, it would be listened to on a road trip with friends in a convertible.
“Dance and laugh!” – and greetings from Jordan!!
