Max Bonbrest lives in New York and is the co-founder of Ayr, a label that produces clothes for timeless women in LA
Max Bonbrest is the co-founder of Ayr, a women’s wear line based in New York. For me, her Instagram account is always like a virtual trip to the Hamptons, where this studied communications specialist spends the majority of her free time. She founded the label alongside her fellow student Maggie Winter and designer Jac Cameron, and this year they’re celebrating three years in business. Reason enough to take you into her world.
Please describe your style in three words?
Classic, minimal, easy-going.
What’s your first fashionable memory?
My grandmother worked for Halston and my mom was a model and artist, so I was always fascinated by clothing and how women wear and sell beautiful textiles. My aunt used to travel to Paris and Italy, bringing me back the most beautiful clothes from all over the world. I still have a leather bomber jacket she gave me when I was 3 years old. I am holding onto it for my own little people someday. What’s cuter than a baby bomber? My obsession with stripes and Parisian style was cultivated from those early trips and I learned early on to appreciate quality in construction and simplicity.

Who was your childhood hero?
Which piece(s) of jewelry do you wear every single day?
A Cartier Trinity Ring. And a Tilda Biehn Flip Ring from my Father. It’s rose gold on one side and yellow gold on the other, so I can change it based on my mood.

What are your favorite restaurants?
Raoul’s in NYC. L’Entrecote in Paris. Gjelina in Venice, California. I LOVE food.
Your favorite shops?
Clic boutique in NYC and East Hampton. General Store in LA – I love what The Line is doing with their compilation of home and fashion goods. We are also opening AYR beach house in Sag Harbor this summer, I couldn’t be more excited to bring our endeavor home with me.
Where do you see yourself in ten years?
Living by the beach, working on AYR.
What’s the last (cultural) discovery that blew your mind?
I just returned from Cuba, where I took my grandmother for her 80th birthday. It was a land frozen in time, so special and also repressed at the same time. It’s a beautiful place. I hope they can figure out a way to preserve and advance its infrastructure.
What are your top three magazines (online or off)?
Vanity Fair, Cereal, and Dwell because I am obsessed with homes and imagining what mine will look like one day – when I don’t live in a West Village studio.
