Angelica Hicks is one of our most beloved illustrators of all time. In any case, her humorous scribbles make our hearts beat a little faster every day when they pop up on Instagram. In this interview, we speak to her about her latest project.
Everyone’s talking about the t-shirts you made in collaboration with Gucci. How did the project come about?
Alessandro (Michele) and I had been following each other on Instagram for a while when I got an email from Gucci saying that they would be interested in optioning the usage rights to a selection of my illustrations that had been inspired by the brand.
What was it like to create a wall mural for the brand? You’ve done two now, one in Milan and one in Soho in NYC.
It is so unbelievable to see my works on that scale! I normally work on 9 by 12 inch watercolor paper, so it is incredible to see one of my creations blown up to that size!
What does Gucci personally mean to you, or rather what does it stand for from your personal point of view?
Gucci is pure imagination. It is particularly inspiring from a creative viewpoint because it is creating a fantasy that transcends periods and trends in a way that I have never before witnessed. The collections are familiar, yet at the same time fantastical – they conjure up faint childhood memories of the dream worlds that existed in fairytales.

How would you describe your current occupation?
I am an illustrator and my work focuses mainly in the realms of fashion and popular culture.
How did you get there?
I needed an outlet from the countless hours spent in the library poring over my thesis during my final semester at university. Wary of distraction and wanting to remain productive, I started producing these illustrations that were almost a visual review of the couture shows, followed by men’s and then women’s fashion weeks. (This stressful period also happened to coincide with fashion month.)
What has been the most important or influential stop on your career path?
I would say this project with Gucci.
What do you love most about your job?
That I can do what I really love.
And what don’t you like so much about your job?
Having to establish a routine as a freelancer. I am fairly disciplined, but it can be tough when you make your own hours.

What is your secret trick to get everything done on time?
I set internal deadlines ahead of schedule. I was never punctual with deadlines when I was at school, but now I seem to not just meet, but to beat every deadline I have! My sister finds that hilarious.
What role does Instagram play in your daily business life?
I upload at least one drawing a day to Instagram. In doing that, I maintain a tradition with how I started – these drawings are always unfiltered fashion or pop culture commentary.
Describe your working situation. What does a typical day look like for you?
I either work from home or from coffee shops. I like the space and freedom I have at home, but you can go a bit stir crazy there.
Who is your favorite person to work with and why?
I like working alone. But I always listen to music while I work. Currently my favorite band to listen to while working is Blur.
How would you describe your ability to balance work and life? Have you had any discoveries lately that you can share?
Sometimes I do find it hard to separate the two. I find it tricky to “switch off” the puns, so to speak. As a freelancer, it is important to be able to balance work and life as the boundaries are more blurred, especially if you work from home a lot like I do. I try to ensure I never work from my bedroom.
