Top 10: Salone del Mobile 2016 Guide

“Camron’s guide to Salone del Mobile”, the press kit that recently arrived in my mailbox, covers no less than 130 pages. If only every PR material, was so neat and structured. This is why it’s so mind-boggling, that the guide doesn’t include a “Best of” list to sum up the event highlights for those whose time is limited.

For all the lucky ones who will head to the Salone del Mobile, taking place in Milan until April 17th, here are our hand-picked recommendations for this year’s Milan Furniture Fair:

1. MARNI BALLHAUS

Marni customised circular skirts that are inspired by those, worn my Colombian Cumbia dancers. They are available starting April 14th which will be celebrated at a cocktail party in the evening.

2. LOEWE

At Art Basel in Miami, LOEWE inspired with the ability to take a broader view and opened an on-site art space. This week, on April 14th a furniture project that goes by the title „Marquetry in Leather“ will be presented at Montenapoleone.

3. WALLPAPER X NEW TENDENCY

As a design institution Wallpaper magazine assembles an exhibition, that reads like a who’s who of aesthetes: David Chipperfield, Aesop, Artek, New Tendency and many more.

4. KALEIDOSCOPE X GRCIC

Another magazine extends an invitation: Kaleidoscope and Zeitmagazin host a party for Konstantin Grcic and Mirko Borsche.

5. HELLA JONGERIUS X VITRA & SERPENTINE

The unique Hella Jongerius joined forces with two partners. The day before yesterday Jongerius celebrated the book launch of „I don’t have a favorite Color“ with vitra – still, the installation “Color Machine” can be marveled at for another week. Furthermore she curated the exhibition “A Search Behind Appearances Shadow Play“ with Serpentine Galleries and Louise Schouwenberg at the La Rinascente Department Store.

6. NIKE INSTALLATION VELARDI & SPORTPROGRAMM

Marco Velardi is not only the genius behind apartamento magazine, but also offered creative input for Nike’s installation „Nature of Motion“. In it, ten artists deal with the topic of natural movement. For those who want to jog or play sports themselves we recommend a program that was designed by Monocle magazine for this very occasion: professional coaches will be assisting and there will also be a matching podcast.

7. JIL SANDER

Abitare and Jil Sander host a preview of “Year of Design” at Via Beltrami.

8. MINI

„Mini Living. Do Not Disturb“ doesn’t sound particularly welcoming at first, but „Locomotif“ will play a live concert and there will be a DJ set by Uabos. Also on the evening of April 14th: from 9pm until the early morning hours. Therefore it comes as no surprise that it’s for invited guests only.

9. MAKERS & BAKERs

Once upon a time Ambra Medda founded the Miami Design Fair and today, she consults clients like AirBnB. During a breakfast that lives up to its name (as it starts at 8.30 am), the guests sit around a big table to gaze at the drafts of ten designers hand selected by Medda herself.

10. VOGUE X MICROSOFT

Some people miss out on innovation and set off to find others of their kind. Seeing these two companies extend a cocktail invitation on April 12th makes you smile a bit.
