Julia Knolle’s reading tip on flamingos and a shopping list to match: it’s a pink social phenomenon
The omnipresence of flamingos culminated at the TOA conference, which recently took place in Berlin and where inflatable birds also firmly belonged to the décor. It was no incidental joke, but rather a start-up with a business plan behind it. For 69 euros, that splash around in the pool during the holidays definitely experienced an upgrade. This phenomenon has also occurred to the Zeit – they dedicated a detailed and considerable text to the bird that can be read in full here (unfortunately only in German). We’re allowing ourselves a little excerpt (translated below) which made all of our hearts in editorial beat a little faster.
A whole swarm of designer can’t keep themselves away from the bird, like Mary Katrantzou, who printed it on t-shirts (330 euro). The flamingo exists as a stiletto (Flamingo Frill” by Sophia Webster), as a champagne (“Flamingo Limited Edition”, Moët & Chandon), a perfume (“Pink Flamingos” by Prada), and as a lip gloss (“Pink Flamingo” by Marc Jacobs). At the same time, MAC Cosmetics has its whole “Flamingo Park” line of pink-colored products. In Gucci’s current campaign, flamingos stand like exclamation points next to eccentrically dressed models. Notwithstanding the above, it’s clear: the flamingo is experiencing a peak in popularity these days, and our selection of little treats proves it.
