Holding the elaborately designed silvery jar from Kjaer Weis, one thinks of many things, just not organic. Modernly designed packaging was important to Kirsten Kjaer Weis, founder and namesake of the natural cosmetics brand. She felt that modern, chemical-free cosmetics that were able to compete with the products of big companies while effectively using high quality, natural biologically derived ingredients were missing from the market.
In her professional life as a makeup artist, the Danish-born New Yorker constantly met women who were looking for just this kind of alternative. So she created a product palette of organic cosmetics, including compact makeup, cream rouge, tinted lip care, eye shadow to mascara – everything you need for a complete look. Since then, the pretty jars and mascara tubes aren’t only found in the pockets of beauty-conscious New Yorkers, but can also be found in Paris, London or Berlin.
Time to give them a try and crown the favorites:
I know organic mascara from health food stores. Crumbly and funny smelling it could mostly be found in purple or brown shades and even my childish instinct told me: this really isn’t any good. I ousted my prejudices against organic mascara when I brought Kjaer Weis’ variant into my bathroom. The mascara, made of almost 100% organic ingredients, dyes the lashes jet black, precisely separating them with the first application and smells like roses
2. Tinted Lip Balm
The lip tint Romance is one of twelve lip shades and particularly impressed me. The strong cool shade of red is somewhere in between coral and deep red geranium, making just looking at it fun. The lip balm is not as strong as it appears in the tin. It leaves a light rose red shimmer on the lips. When applied to the cheeks, it appears as a brilliant sunset pink, resulting in a happy and healthy appearance. Beeswax and shea butter care for the skin without drying or other typical after effects of lip care. Most Kjaer Weis products have been awarded CCPB, the Italian stamp for organic products. Because Romance contains red and yellow, which can’t be produced organically, it is not certified organic (it is “only” 95% organic). Romance is as organic as possible, without losing any of its wonderful and incredibly intense color.
Like Porcelain, as the cream foundation is named, says it all: The compact foundation evens the skin with a light sand tone, corrects imperfections and conceals dark circles for porcelain-perfect skin. The foundations, which are available in nine shades, can be applied at your own pace, or quickly on the go with your fingers or a brush, thanks to their creamy consistency. Almond, coconut and jojoba oils ensure that the compact makeup doesn’t lay on the skin like a dry layer, rather it is absorbed and moisturizes simultaneously. I found that the foundation works best when applied directly after moisturizing or using a serum – because it almost melts on moisturized skin, which looks even, smooth and lightly shimmery. Just don’t be surprised by the scent: which, of course, is neutral, so anyone used to perfumed creams and makeup, likely has to become accustomed to the scent of natural cosmetics. The pretty box, which closes with the click of a magnet, means that the foundation is undoubtedly a win for both the makeup bag and our faces.
Good to know: There are so-called refills for all Kjaer Weis products, which can easily be transferred into the jewelry box-like jars. Sustainability in its most beautiful form!
